Are you still salty? Have you ever wondered how one scripture relates to another, or even how it relates to you?
Let’s look at a few scriptures today to see how they: relate to one another, how they align to the ultimate God- purposed goal for us and how it applies to you.
First let’s look at our base scripture in Matthew 5:13-15 it says, “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.
14 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.
If we take the first sentence salt of the earth, we are looking for what’s the practical purpose for salt, and then where else earth salt is referred to in the bible.
Scripture References
Matthew 5:13-15
Genesis 1:26-27
Genesis 2:7
John 8:12
Salt, by Dictionary definition is a white crystalline substance that gives seawater its characteristic taste and is used for seasoning or preserving food.
Some practical uses for salt are as an additive to the ocean or in science: aiding the balance of electrolytes and fluids, carry nutrients into cells, regulation of acid-base balance, support transfer of nerve impulses, regulating blood pressure, and secretion of gastric acid.
Salt also has natural healing properties and is used as a purification source for inflamed or infected things.
What does the Hebrew word salt mean?
In various contexts, it is used metaphorically to signify permanence, loyalty, durability, fidelity, usefulness, value, and purification.
Note: though we are using a New Testament base scripture, we have a Hebrew definition for salt, showing that Jesus (the symbol for purification) was in the beginning and is carried throughout the old and new testament.
Where else in scripture are humans likened to the earth, salt/dust?
If we look at Genesis 2:7 it says Then the Lord God formed a man[a] from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.
So as humans we were literally made from the salt of the earth. Then it goes on to explain how we were purposed to have dominion over the land and govern every created thing.
Verses 14 and 15 speak about the light of the world. Who do we immediately know is the light of the world?
Jesus. It says so in John 8:12 “When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
So how does Jesus being the light of the world relate to us, our purpose and losing saltiness?
We know that we were made in His likeness in Genesis 1:26-27 where it says Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”27 So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.
Since we were made in the image of God, and made with a purpose, we are to fashion ourselves like Him. In essence we were created as a support, balance and carrier for created things. We are to govern and were initially created with pure intentions. Jesus was sent to serve as our purification and balance after the fall. We are still tasked to govern created things.
The Scripture in Matthew 5:13 is a simple scripture of definition and instruction on how we should live in accordance with our purpose and how we keep our potency.
